Discover Eden's Forgotten Church

May 19, 2024

Hidden away in a farmer's field, beside a bend in the River Eamont to the east of Penrith, sits St Ninian's Church. For centuries, it served as the parish church of Brougham, a small village 2 miles away as the crow flies. Those who make the effort to visit could be forgiven for wondering, 'Who would build a church in such an isolated place'?

The original Norman church was rebuilt in the seventeenth century by Lady Anne Clifford.

Inside, the church remains unaltered and appears as it would have done in the times of Lady Anne.

The church was closed in 1934 and is now in the care of the Disused Churches Trust.
