28-Day Photo Challenge: Week 4

Jul 22, 2024

In June 2024, I started a 4-week project to photograph the area around the village where I live. With the aim of encouraging people to find 30 minutes a day to take photos, I set out to explore the area within walking distance of my house. Here's how I got on in week 4.

Distance walked: 2 miles

I am feeling a bit flat today. England lost in the final of the European Championships last night, and although it was expected, it has left me with a dose of melancholy.

Didn't feel much like going out to take photos, but I forced myself to take an amble around the lanes. To be honest, I was just going through the motions.

The photos from this morning were as lacklustre as England's performances this summer. In fact, none of the pictures from the last three days are likely to be included in the final 28. I need to pull my finger out because if I fall behind now, there isn't a lot of time to catch up.

Tuesday 16th

Distance walked: 8 miles

This morning, I went for the biggest walk of the project so far. When I started, less than 4 weeks ago, an 8-mile hike would be almost unthinkable. But as my fitness levels increase, I feel I could have pushed myself further!

I was hoping that by getting a few miles under my belt I would bag a few decent photos, but alas it didn't work out that way. I managed just enough to stop me from slipping behind, but with 5 days left to go, I still need at least 5 photos.

I had hoped that tracking the photos in this way would keep me focused, but I have become obsessed by the 'numbers'. But things have been going so well up to this point, it would be a shame to drop the ball at this late stage.

Wednesday 17th

Distance walked: 4 miles

I had always planned on publishing the photos from this project in a zine, but about halfway through I decided I'd add 28 lessons that have shaped my photography.

For the past 7 days, I have been trying to write these lessons but have been struggling. I don't know if it is writer's block, but I've wasted hours sitting at my desk and have little to show for it.

I've been beating myself up over my lack of progress which has taken a little of the shine off of everything that I have achieved so far. So, for now, I am going to put the writing on hold and focus on completing the project.

Thursday 18th

Distance walked: 3 miles

As the end of the project approaches, I have been thinking about what I want to happen next.

The aim of the project was to inspire as many people to embrace photography and its many benefits as possible. I wanted to show that you don't need a fancy camera or amazing scenery to enjoy photography. And in that respect, I think the project has been successful.

But it will all have been in vain if no one is inspired to follow the path I have laid out. And at the moment, that is my biggest fear.

Friday 19th

Distance walked: 4 miles

I only have three days left of the project and while, for the most part, I have had my head down, focusing on doing the best job I possibly can, I now find I want to take time and enjoy it while it lasts.

I have been lucky with the weather. This summer has been wet and humid, but the overcast skies make for better photographs and have allowed me to play to my strengths. In many ways, I could not have wished for more.

As the end approaches, it is only natural to wonder what will come next. There is no doubt in my mind that I will tackle another project but for now, I have no idea what that might entail. For now, I shall focus on the here and now and try to push thoughts of what is to come to one side.

Saturday 20th

Distance walked: 4 miles

The penultimate day of the project and there is still a lot to do. I need four more photos to complete the set of 28 I have been striving towards. 28 might seem arbitrary, but I like the symmetry of 28 photos in 28 days.

Despite only having two days to get the last four photos, I remain relaxed. I know exactly the four shots I need and the forecast for the next two days is precisely what I need to fulfill my vision. Something will go wrong, I am sure, but I will deal with any problems as and when they arise.

For now, I shall remain focused on the task at hand. I am confident I have done enough work for things to come good at the last moment, but if I take my eye off the ball now, I'll always regret it.

Sunday 21st

Distance walked: 1 mile

Only one mile to cover today to complete my fourth marathon. In total, I have walked 104 miles in four weeks in pursuit of the 28 photographs that will be selected for the final project.

I still had two photos to get. Photos that have taken a little refining to get right. But conditions were in my favour and I bagged both with the minimum of fuss.

But my work is not done. If anything, the hard work is still to come. I now have the onerous task of promoting the project, so that as many people are encouraged to have a go for themselves.
