I recently spent the day on Helm Crag with fellow YouTube photographer James Burns. James showed me how, when photographing in the mountains, he looks for intimate compositions using his telephoto lens.
To start with I really struggled to find a composition – I just don’t see like James does, at least not yet. Eventually I settled on this view of Dunmail Raise as the light started to hit the side of the hills.
I did start to get a bit disheartened, perhaps I’m not as good a photographer as I thought I was. This shot of Gibson Knott isn’t really my thing, it lacks a strong focal point for the eye to settle on.
Finally something I am comfortable with, a selfie! One of the loveliest views in the whole of the Lake District, looking out over Grasmere towards Loughrigg Fell.
